Joe! I only read half of your email -- I stopped when you began to give away plot. Mustn't know that until
I see the film!!!

I don't care if it is a dreadful story, shot poorly, and with poor acting (except for that one extra - I think he was in that 8-second wideshot -- where's his agent?!) just the fact that I have walked the streets where it was shot is enough for me to fork over the $7.25.

Joe,

Thanks for the behind the scenes pictures and movie review. I stoped reading after it flashed ahead four years so I could avoid any spoilers, but I think I may go see it just for it's inclusion of Upstate New York.

Excellent review. Did you send it somewhere to have it published? It had the effect of making me not want to see the movie, or at least walk out after the local bits. I assume that they only show the old timey stuff in the beginning.

Are you planning on going again tomorrow?

Hi Joe:

I just wanted to write and double check...is it cool with you if I throw this up on the site? (www.dvdwolf.com that is). You always have to double check in this world!

If so, mucho gracias...some very funny stuff there.

Dear Joe:

Your review left me laughing! It mixes satire, sarcasm, and downright (blasphemous) criticism with humor so well, I didn't know whether I wanted to go (to see the film) just to re-read your review with better knowledge or just pass on it until the video comes out! Cheaper and still funny!

Thanks for taking the time and effort to write your opinions and "first hand" experience and sending it to all of UI.

Dan DiNicola (today's paper) agrees with your conclusion -- but following your "time time machine" was a far better ride than his!

Sincerely,
Michele

Joe,

Don't be bitter (not as in bitter cold). Most people, including me, would love to be on a set of any major motion picture just to see what it is like. The fact that you got some screen time, makes it all the better.

I read a local review of the TM and it got a mediocre write up. I may see it eventually-video, DVD. I teach lit, and am considering using Well's original work in class. If so, I should be up on what the latest movie version is like.

See you (maybe) in the movies. I'll look for your face--the one aghast at the death of the girlfriend.

Panning a movie that you are in? Can you be sued by the producers?

just saw the film yesterday & saw your comments. Great review!  I agree with almost everything you said. Just that he DID arrive earlier to meet his soon-to-be-fiancée. When it first happened he was late getting
there & the 2nd time he was early. I was pretty disappointed with the movie, but I don't think it was terrible. Barry

Joe G RESPONSE:

Thanks for the feedback....I was making a point about CONTINUITY when he arrived the second time around. Although the dialogue points to Alexander meeting Emma early, I was merely noting what I saw as a continuity flaw in the scene when they repeated the same shot on the same extras both times around. I've gotten a few e-mails about this, so I suppose I'll have to look at the movie again to see if it is, in fact, the same background actors. If not, I may be wrong, but not as wrong as the producers were for making this movie as bad as they did.

Thanks Again!

UPDATE: I checked the movie over again...and again....I have a bootleg...don't ask how....and I was right...for the most part...the same couple that rented the skates the first time around (the gentleman has a mustache) are there the second time around, too - 2 couples in line behind the ones renting them the second time around. Now, unless it's taking more than a minute per couple to rent skates, this, as I pointed out earlier was a piss-poor example of continuity. Alexander really wasn't THAT early!!!!

 Hi Joe,

I have included your review on my site and added your photos also. I've included links to your site and your e-mail address. If you would like any changes made please feel free to say so.

It's a shame that the film isn't better than it is. I did enjoy watching it, I've seen it three times so far, but wish it had more substance. After seeing Gladiator I thought that John Logan was being over rated as a screen writer, seems to me, any 12 year old could have written a sword and sandal movie. There is no excuse to getting Time Machine wrong.

Thanks again, Don Coleman The Time Machine Project

Joe,

I loved reading your review! Every criticism is totally warranted - and then some. Liked the way you picked it apart in such great detail. Only if DreamWorks had done the same. Hey Simon, film-make responsibly! Who's gonna clean up that slop now?

Best,

Chris P

I agree with your review and it's nice that you have spoken up. Maybe Timemac will see it's all kinds of people who hate this film.

It's a turkey and IS SINKING FAST!!!

extra extra! All extras get pissed at the movie makers when most, if not all their screen time is left on the editing room's floor.

Go into your job realizing this: you are only visual filler! You are expendable! Just accept your paycheck, go to the theater, and enjoy the work of art you played a (very) small part in creating.

On a positive note, your links are quite enjoyable, and your review informative (if not entirely accurate).

timemac

I agree with myrddin. Ending up on the cutting room floor happens, not only to extras, but sometimes to a cast member. Worse things happen in life than that. I'd just be excited that I could brag that I was in the movie for the second people can actually see me!

Joe G RESPONSE:

Thanks! But I'm really not bitter guys! I'm glad you all enjoyed the review...but I'm really not bitter that I didn't get a close-up...(other than my memories of the bitter cold!) I know about the whole "extras" landing on the cutting room floor because I actually work professionally in the industry on the other side of the camera and have thrown their footage on the floor myself. "Expendables" is more like it. It was said entirely in satire. I'm just disappointed that a movie which I was routing for did so poorly and that I didn't have to be a Morlock!

Take care!

doit

Joe G, I knew you were writing a satire. It seems Timemac (who has to be someone in power of this film a Producer or something) can't see even a satire. The movie is a joke and nothing they can do will save it.

I agree with you about the Time Machine movie completely! The movie had the
look, the actors, the effects but no story. The original is soooo much better.
Simon Wells should be shamed of himself especially since he is related to H G
Wells. The worst part about this movie is that they could have done such a
better job that it would have been a sleeper hit spanning numerous sequels. I'm
very sad the messed up one of my favorite movies

Joe-
Enjoyed your review! I also was an extra that had an extensive (for an extra) time on the set being filmed which did not make the final cut. And what was even more disappointing is that while I know that many scenes are filmed and only a select few make the final cut, an HBO "First Look" program actually had a small clip that I was in. Unfortunately none of that made the final film. However, enough of sour grapes. In the final movie release, the vendor renting skates to some individuals that you mentioned, is renting them to myself and a few others. I actually got to see my ugly mug tens of feet high in the Crossgates Cinemas (and that can be truly frightening as my office staff subsequently indicated). I also made two other brief background appearances when Alexander arrives at the park the second time. So all in all, I received my "money's worth" when it comes down to the bottom line. As you know and indicated, 99% of extras in a film never even see themselves in a recognizable venue, so I do consider myself lucky. The almost unlucky ones (but not quite) were my patients needing treatment after two long nights filming in Central Park. Fortunately they were very understanding and no significant therapy had to be completed (not to mention the wonderful benefits of caffeine). Therefore we must all await the inevitable Video/DVD release for the bonus features which hopefully will include deleted scenes. Until that time, I may partake of a guilty pleasure and actually see the film again.

Thanks,
Michael

Dear Joe:

Took my 12-year-old to see the remake last Sunday - exactly the same age when my father took ME to see the 1960 original.

Bottom line - I thought it was awful! It lacked the "charm" of the original. Mystery, awe and delight in Rod Taylor's expressions during time travel were convincing to me as a 12-year old along with the special effects. "Yeah," I thought, "I can buy that!" The model was cute, the relationship between Taylor and Young was genuine (especially in the 1993 "The Time Machine - The Journey Back"). The relationship between Hardegen and Philby was stilted and forced. The Time Machine itself, the Sphinx, Talking Rings, Weena, Morlocks, Eloi (true to the book) - they all had wonderment and "charm." When Taylor left at the end of the movie, I came away with a sense that he was truly "gone" because of his love for Weena.

In short, lots of "emotions" in the original, none in the remake. The so-called music had that "African" influence - huh??? The Eloi males looked like skinheads. Mara was okay but too cute. Where was the experimental "model?" Where was the unique "sound" of the original craft - as a 12-year-old, I thought that was really neat! The atomic war of August 18, 1966 - scary, but relevant in the 1960 period. What about the strange "fruit?" None of these little details emerged in the remake.

When Hardegen sets off, he looks unimpressed with time travel - Taylor looked excited and was in total awe of the experience. Meeting Filby's son in 1917 - what a great touch! Again, no "charm."

Taylor comes back to January 5, 1900 to tell his friends the story - interesting. Hardegen stays, never to come back and has no machine! Wah?????

Well, not even a "nice try." I expected to be disappointed and I was. Too bad Pal didn't make a sequel with Taylor in the 1960's.

Thanks for reading these comments.
