JOE'S COMMENTS

This was the first film I did stills for. I came in around May of '99, about half way into production because the previous photographer got fired for bothering the talent. So - no pressure. I received a call from friend, Dave Blanchard, who was the editor on the movie. He asked me if I knew of any photographers. "Yeah...me," I replied. The production manager immediately got on the phone and told me I was hired. "When should I be there?," I asked. "Tomorrow," she replied. That marked the beginning of a string of films I would work on.

I'm also in a scene of the film, shot on the first day I was on set. The script called for a newspaper photographer to be hovering over the detective's back. He gets mad and has the police pull me back. Well, when the camera rolled, he threw his hands back in the air, accidentally pushing the camera into my face - so I'm not acting! I'm the angry one with the beard. Yeah, I actually had a beard for about three months. I grew it in just to be able to say I did it. I'll never do it again!

Interestingly enough, while I was shooting the scene below with Morgan and Michael, I ran out of film in my Minoltas. They were right in character and I didn't want to ruin it. So I pulled out my $80 Olympus Stylus point and shoot. "You're using that?!," Michael gasped. "Trust me," I said. The look on their faces were priceless, but I didn't dare take a picture of that. The photos below of the pair with the gun were taken with the pocket cam (no flash) at that moment. I will now forever swear by it.
Hey, Olympus! Need a spokesman?
