Not many people are familiar with what a still or unit photographer does on a movie set. No, he doesn't stand still and take photos, although most of the crew wish he would. Basically, all of the photos you see on a movie poster, video box or magazine articles are taken by the still photographer. That's why the shots don't exactly match what you may see on screen. He or she has a little more creative latitude to capture the image. Most of the time they will use a box around the camera called a sound blimp, which silences the shutter noise so the microphone doesn't pick it up. Stills guys often don't get a lot of respect on sets because they don't have to be on the set as long as the rest of the crew, just when talent is there. That is, unless there's a lot of stunts or effects that need to be covered, like in "Lightning." Joe has shot the stills for all of the films on the left. After the stills are shot, they are sent out to the publicist in Los
Angeles, who then selects the best shots to use. Unfortunately, most of
the main camera stills are out there, and not yet available for posting.
However, many of the behind-the-scenes photos are on their relative
pages, along with a few main stills and the video boxes, if the film has
been released.. All photos contained herein are copyright Joe Glickman and their respective film distributors. They may not be reproduced, distributed or sold without written consent from their owners. |
